There are over 1,500 Search Engines and directories on the Internet today. How do you reach out to them all? Simple; you don't – at least not at first. The top 4 Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask) are used for over 85% of all web searches. When you concentrate on these, most of the smaller sites will pick up and index your site as well.

However, it's important to remember that niche Search Engines (i.e. medical search) can be important alternative sources for qualified traffic.

Many leading Search Engines have partnerships with web publishers, and supply some of the search results. Keeping track of these relationships lets you target niche audiences for much less cost per click than a general Search Engine would.
